French investors look to Denmark for new ventures

A group of investors, Idinvest Partners and Partech Ventures among others, came to meet Danish and Öresund-based tech startups yesterday. They met ten promising tech startups and they also met with local VCs and Business Angels to connect and explore future collaborations. The tour was arranged by #CPHFTW, and the purpose was, as with all the VC Events we host, to give the investors a bridgehead into the region. In this case so the recent investment of €4 million from Idinvest Partners in Peakon can be followed up on with investments in other startups. Peakon and Idinvest met in 2015 at a #CPHFTW VC event.

Idinvest Partners chose in 2015 to check out the region. This was in a year where Denmark asserted itself as a tech startup hub in terms of venture capital investments (1.7 billion DKK according to brand new figures from The Nordic Web). Denmark is now in a situation where the country is on par with Finland and is no longer eclipsed by the giant hub in neighboring Sweden (Stockholm). This development is looking to continue in 2016. The investment tour comes right after the month of January where Vivino raised €30 million from, among others Moët Hennessy’s global CEO Christophe Navarre.

Bridgehead into Denmark and The Öresund Region

Guillaume Durao, Investment Director at Idinvest Partners, met the team behind Peakon at an investor event hosted by the tech startup organization #CPHFTW in May 2015. While keeping in touch with Peakon he searched for more potential companies. In this effort he met with more than 40 companies, created a network in the region with help from #CPHFTW, and realized that the region had a lot to offer.

Guillaume Durao shared his enthusiasm with his friends at Partech Ventures, also a Paris-based venture capital firm, and with two Business Angels. The result: The party of investors are coming on a tour arranged by #CPHFTW.

Guillaume Durao on his relationship to Denmark and The Öresund Region:

“Denmark and The Öresund Region is at an inflexion point and has all the ingredients to become a successful European startup scene. Here you find great schools, talented engineers, designers and managers; a welfare state enabling all young people to take risks; business angels, role models and mentors who come from success stories such as Zendesk, Just Eat, Success Factors, etc. and who are ready to help younger entrepreneurs; great local VCs and a close-knit, international community, well organized around #CPHFTW that promotes it very efficiently and is a top liaison with foreign VCs. It’s been a pleasure to do business here so far. Most founders I met were smart, confident, well-educated, spoke perfect English and had that very special trait you find in smaller, open-minded countries: international ambitions from day one. At Peakon, we have just launched but we already have landmark customers from Denmark, Germany, Portugal, France, the UK, the US, etc.”

The Investor Tour will first take place at one of the largest tech startup coworking spaces in Denmark, Rainmaking Loft at Holmen in Copenhagen, where a startups will individually pitch their business model to and have a conversation with all the investors. These meetings will continue in the afternoon at Klub, a brand new membership club in Central Copenhagen, aiming to connect the best people across diverses industries. In the evening the French investors will meet with Danish and Swedish investors. The next day is set aside for individual meetings in one of the other major coworking spaces, Founders House, and with companies residing in the area called Startup Village at Islands Brygge in Copenhagen.

Boris Golden, Principal, Partech Ventures adds:

“We’re really excited by the opportunity to meet with some of the best early-stage startups of the Danish and Öresund tech scene. I have several friends who launched their startups in Copenhagen and I’ve been consistently impressed by the quality of the ecosystem. At Partech, we’re funding the most promising startups in the US and Europe, thus coming to visit Denmark is an obvious choice when you know how vibrant the ecosystem is there. We’re looking forward to making more investments in this area, bringing our transatlantic expertise to Danish and Öresund-based startups!”

Christoffer H. Malling, Managing Director of #CPHFTW elaborates on the current situation:

“Guillaume Durao and Idinvest are with their activities the best example of Denmark and The Öresund Region seeing a growth in the number and size of investments alongside increased attention from international investors. The region is now at a moment in time where we with the upsurge in venture capital can attain critical mass by combining the capital with skilled founder teams who have a view to international markets, even before applying for incorporation, and who can create products and services that can compete on  global markets.

#CPHFTW works to enhance this development by inviting international investors to the region and to provide them with a network among both startups and local investors and other stakeholders. We are also helping in creating international PR, which catches the attention of international investors, large international tech startups and talented professionals.”
